The use of drama as a means of increasing students' engagement in speaking activities

This thesis deals with the use of drama techniques in order to improve students' speaking skills. The purpose of the study is to determine whether the use of fictional situations and characters can provide students with the incentive and motivation to speak and help them with their willingness to communicate. The main indicator for this will be the extent to which the students who otherwise rarely volunteer to engage in oral communicative activities speak during a lesson. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical part first provides a brief introduction to teaching speaking, an overview of reasons why some students might be more reluctant to speak than others, and a summary of recommendations of various authors on the topic of teaching speaking skills and how to increase student talking time. It then further looks into the findings from existing research on communication breakdowns and the use of drama as a motivation for students to speak. The practical part describes an action research project conducted by the author with seventh-grade pupils of a private primary school, where she teaches. A diploma thesis is concerned with research. The research is focused on compare of effectiveness and differences of two opposite techniques, which are using in school environment. Methods and techniques of drama in contrast of clasics method of frontal teaching. A primary aim of diploma thesis is finding out, if these particular methods has got influences for better or worst understanding and remembering subject metter and how big are these influences. The diploma thesis is devided on two parts. First is theoretics and second is practics part. Thoretics part is making efforts to sketch these problematics of technical viewpoint. It is woking mainly with specialized literature. Theoretics part is creating foundations for practics part. Practics part is asking about researches questions first and choosing exploratives methodes for research. Like researchs method is selecting of analysis of tests from children from both of classes. Specific of Roma Population worked out through the means of Drama in Education

This thesis focuses on the topic of multicultural education based on elaborated methods and techniques of drama in education. The theoretical part deals with the drama in education, its objectives, methods and techniques, and its inclusion in The Framework Educational Program for Basic Education (FEP), then on the Roma population and its specifics, multicultural education, its goals and its inclusion in the FEP. Through structured drama techniques in the practical part I try to explain school children the history, culture, values and way of life of the Roma population reflected by assimilation policy of the Czech Republic of the last century. Via this drama in education lessons focused on learning the specifics of the Roma population, I make an effort to prevent or influence prejudices. I have chosen to focus on this ethnic minority as it is the largest ethnic group in the Czech Republic and it is exposed to probably most significant racial prejudice. La pièce de théâtre comme outil d'enseignement de l'histoire dans la région Pays de la Loire Using Theatre as a Didactic Tool for History Lessons in the Pays de la Loire Region Bc. Klára Paseková Abstract This thesis describes the advantages of using theater play as a didactic tool for history teaching, with specific examples from the area of Pays de la Loire, France. The special role of school externist in the context of French schools is introduced, as well as the specific place of drama play as a motivational and educational tool in connection with the subject of history. Using the example of the play Mystère sur les quais de Nantes, the usefulness of the theater play for explaining complex history concept is demonstrated. Materials for history teachers include preparation instructions, the play itself and materials for subsequent discussion session with the author Mme Le Fahler and workshop. Further analysis illustrates the specifics of creating a play for the purpose of teaching history. The aim of this work is to describe the proceedings of a beginning teacher and beginning drama bee at Elementary school and Kindergarden Pernink where the classwork is conducted in a form of joint classes. The general organization of the bee is built upon my teaching experience yet and specialised literature therefore the main focus will be on personality and social education, preparatory games and exercises, elements of dramatic expressions, technique of declamation , acting games and improvisation and methods and techniques used in drama education. Use of drama in children's folklore group

This thesis deals with use of drama in a children folklore group. The main aim is using of drama in education of children and creation of production. Another aim is to find out what advantages drama brings to children folklore group. The thesis also deals with a structure of a heterogeneous group of children (children of different ages) and with a role of a preschool child in such group. In the theoretical part there are mentioned basic terms such as folk culture, folklore, children folklore and folklorism. Methods and aims of drama are also introduced. It deals with the connection between drama and children folklore group. In the experimental part there is described a project which studies possibilities when using drama in a preparation of production in particular children folklore group. Possibilities of using drama for production preparation were shown. The outcomes of the project enable us to say, that drama is useful during creation of production and even in production itself. It brings nature to children manners in production. Different ages of children have been beneficial - younger children were taught by the older ones. Role Playing within the English Lessons at the Primary School

The aim of this diploma work is to show possibilities of a role play in teaching english, using different methods of drama in education, which leads pupils to deeper understanding and starting the work and its influence of pupil's experience and pupil's taking part in solving problems with the situation and remembering cognitive and emotional benefits of a role play afterwards to motivate pupils for next learning. This diploma work describes aims and methods of nowdays ways of teaching foreign languages, explains new trends in teaching young learners (primary school). It describes their psychological development in age 6 to 11 and try to explain how it has an influence in teaching languages at primary schools. It causes the main differences between teaching adults and young learners. Teaching languages through methods of drama in education brings different approach to teaching. It develops teaching in two levels - in cognitive knowledge and in emotional experiences.
